CABARET ORGANIZATIONS GEARING UP FOR MARCH IS CABARET MONTH
The original concept of MARCH IS CABARET MONTH was developed by cabaret venue owners in NYC to increase the awareness - and attendance - of cabaret events during the slow months of winter. The month of March chosen because, in those days, the month would kick off with the annual BACK STAGE BISTRO awards gala and end with the annual MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) AWARDS. However, as MAC began to reschedule its awards show later into April and then into May, and the BACK STAGE BISTRO awards show became a private event for winners and their friends only (the publication no longer supports the BISTRO AWARDS) the concept of MARCH IS CABARET MONTH faded away.
In January of 2008, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, an online website and twice weekly e-mail newsletter with 2700 subscribers, took upon itself the task of resurrecting MARCH IS CABARET MONTH and with the support of performers, venues and cabaret organizations. Special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH events are held around the world each year, kicked off by a special MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA presented in NYC on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm at the THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). MC of the event is renowned cabaret performer Richard Skipper. Tom Stajmiger, who is producing the show on behalf of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE has announced this year's theme as "The Composers of Cabaret".Tickets for the gala are on sale online at http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/

Sharon McNight "The First 30 Years"

Cabaret's iconic entertainer and Tony award nominee, Sharon McNight, debuts "The First 30 Years" - an introspective retrospect from Moose Hall to Carnegie Hall (and all the gin joints on the way) at the New York City's Metropolitan Room in March with Ian Herman as the musical director. In "The First 30 Years," Sharon shares her quixotic experiences from performing on a stage of stacked beer cases in San Francisco's Castro District to starring on Broadway in "Starmites" or from the Reno Rodeo to the Frankfort Opera House. The California native is a favorite with concert and cabaret audiences, and is know for her sardonic comedy style and wry comments plus an eclectic mix of songs from "Desperado" to the reenactment of "The Wizard of OZ." To many, her off-the-cuff ad libs and audience participation may be the most revered elements of any McNight show; "The First 30 Years" is no exception. Through the miracle of scrapbooking, (before it became popular), McNight backs up every story with hard evidence. McNight was awarded twice by Bay Area Critics as Best Actress for her performance in "Hello Dolly" and "Nunsense." Her other awards include a MAC, Bistro, Golden Gull, 5 Cabaret Golds, 3 Cable Cars, and a Nightlife from New York critics for Best Musical Comedy - "Ladies, Compose Yourselves!" Sharon has appeared in film and on television, most recently on the Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana." Of her many accomplishments, McNight is most proud of her funding raising work on behalf of AIDS charities.

Hello Readers:
Last Monday I loved going to see JEROME ELLIOTT in "Bat Out Of Jersey" at Blame. Funny how much I missed when he did it at Billy Reed's because I was so distracted with playing producer. Tonight it is LAURIE DEANE and Friends with MICHAEL HOLMES, JEAN SORF, CAROL KAMENIS, and JOEL BAKER on piano. See you there.
CABARET OPEN MIC TUESDAYS was the busiest ever with 17 wonderful singers so I will only list their names this week. They were: DENNY SEINFELD, JEAN SORF, DAWN SPITZ, ERIC SPITZ, LINDSAY OUELETTE, newcomer ELAINE WANG-MEYERHOFFER, newcomer/pianist GALE ENGER, JUDY DEERTRACK, newcomer GEORGE BARROS, FRANCESCA AMARI, PATRICK ARENDALL, CHUCK WALLACE, VICKI KNIGHT, newcomer DAVID, MARGE, MICHAEL HOLMES, and CLEER plus JOEL BAKER and yours truly. What a fabulous night.
This week Joel has a previous engagement, therefore, we are honored to have with us as guest accompanist, MR. TERRY JORDAN. Terry has played all over the country and is very accomplished in all styles of music. Bring your sheet music and come on down!!
Get there before 7 PM for the $3 drink specials but the $5 appetizers are good all night long. Come and see the best show in town.
Remember, no cover charge.
ALSO: JOEL BAKER IS AVAILABLE FOR REHEARSALS AND HE CAN ALSO MAKE YOU PROFESSIONAL TRACKS FOR BOTH SHOW PURPOSES AND FOR PRACTICE. HIS RATES ARE GREAT. Check out his new web site at: WWW.MISTERPIANO.COM
There's a new WEB PAGE for CABARET OPEN MIC TUESDAYS
Wednesday night I headed over to see Drag Dazzle at Hunter's with special vocal guest LAURIE DEANE. As always the show was full house and they put on one heck of a show.
Thursday night we stayed in but watch a good movie that just came out at the $1 Movie Machine at Ralphs. It was 2010, the big budget disaster movie that had you on the edge of your chair like you were on a roller coaster ride at Six Flags. Be sure to see it if you missed it at the movies.
Friday night was kind of busy for me with two wonderful invitation and I managed to do them both, sort of. First off I was asked to come to the "Spring Fling Cabaret" presented by Bloom In The Desert and took place at MICHAEL H. LORD GALLERY. I could only stay for the social hour and caught only the first entertainer who was ELAINE WANG-MEYERHOFFER. Next up, DANA ADKINS arranged for 2 comps to GOLF - THE MUSICAL. And I have to say it is everything a great musical review should be. Great songs, great talent, and some of the funniest jokes you have every heard. Even non-golfers will love it. Also in the cast is my very talented friend from LA, JANE KINSEY, and the guys were ERIC OLSON, and ALAN PALMER. Don't go expecting a story because musical revues don't have them, just songs, funny stories, skits, jokes, and lots of fun. Don't miss this show playing at The Palm Springs Woman's Club Theatre - a real gem that this town sorely needs. Thanks also to JEROME ELLIOTT for being my plus one.
After Golf, I took a ride over to see JEANINE JACKSON-FRANCIS at Blame. She had a really good crowd and boy can she sing. Recording artist CLEER also was there and had brought a 2 camera video crew to tape a segment with he and Jeanine doing a duet of "My Funny Valentine" and I was asked to do a little spot introducing them. I was ready for my close up and happy that Jane Kinsey decided to come for a drink after her performance of Golf as well. What a fun night.
Saturday night I stayed in as well as Sunday night - I mean it was THE OSCARS - I couldn't miss that could I? I was happy with the results and think the production was very well done and also think the Kodak Theater is a better choice for this event.
That was my week... how was your?

ALEX VARDEN SAYS....

ALEX VARDEN at the piano in his West Hollywood music studio.

AND HERE IS ONE OF HIS WONDERFUL CATS: RICE ON THE LEFT AND PEPPER ON THE RIGHT
TURN WEEKNESS INTO STRENGTH...
You know your best qualities and strengths, but don't be afraid to also examine your weaknesses. In them you'll find some of your greatest potential.
Certainly you can always make improvements to what you already do well. Yet at best, those will be incremental improvements.
Consider, though, what happens when you work on overcoming your weaknesses. The results in your life can be revolutionary.
In fact, transforming your weakness into a strength can make all your other strengths more effective. When the weakness is no longer holding you back, every part of your life will see the benefits.
Be thankful for your strengths and honest about your weaknesses. For when you are clear about what you cannot yet do well, that's the first step to improvement.
Any weakness can be transformed into strength when you have the courage to admit it and then grow from there. Be strong, be smart, be persistent, and sing all your doubts and fears away!

Top Ten Tips When Creating a Cabaret Show
By Michael Miyazaki
Michael Miyazaki is a cabaret artist based in the Washington DC area. In addition to performing, Michael does extensive repertoire consulting and research for cabaret performers, as well as directing. Michael's blog, Miyazaki Cabaret Report: DC and Beyond (CabaretDC.wordpress.com) provides news, reviews and resources for anyone with an interest in cabaret, with a special focus on performance activity in the Washington DC area. Michael is also the DC correspondent for Cabaret Scenes magazine, writing a monthly Washington activities column and providing reviews and other content.
1. Remember the character you are playing is "you". When you're doing a cabaret act, the most important thing to remember is that the character on stage is you, or at least an idealized (hopefully) version of yourself. You are responsible for every thought and word expressed up there whether sung, spoken, written by someone else or ad libbed on the spur of the moment. It's OK to portray a character once or twice in a show, but the audience has come to see YOU!
2. Know what your audience expects of you. If you have a following because of your theatrical work, recognize that and honor it. If there's a role you're famous for, a type of character you usually portray, honor the audience's expectations, so they'll see some of that. We all know the experience of going to see an artist and being disappointed because they didn't do what we most wanted to hear them do. Know what is unique about YOU as a performer, and why someone should come see you as opposed to any other entertainment options they have.
3. Surprise your audience. However, cabaret is the perfect forum for showing what a 3-dimensional artist you can be. Show a different side of your personality that audiences don't usually get to see. Challenge yourself and the audience in the process.
4. Think of the structure of your act. The biggest mistake that musical theater performers make in cabaret is thinking "I have ten songs that I know, so I should do a show." Pay attention to the structure of your show and its flow. A good approach is suggested by cabaret icon Andrea Marcovicci when she suggests that a good cabaret show is like a blind date with the audience. You open pleasant and general, talk about the weather, and reveal things about yourself gradually until you come to a big emotional payoff. You don't enter, say hello, and then announce that you're suicidal because your boyfriend just dumped you and the subsequent eviction would have you living on the street if it weren't for the fact that you stole a key to the methadone clinic you frequent.
5. Have a dialogue with the audience. The point of cabaret is that you can have a direct experience with the audience. You can look in their eyes. You can walk around the room and engage people directly. Yes, there are certain numbers where you can erect a "fourth wall", but an entire evening of that is, by definition, distancing. Treat the audience as your scene partner. A great technique is to script lines that you hear in your head in between the phrases of your song. E.g. "Some day, he'll come along." Who? "The man I love." Oh, what'll he be like? "And he'll be big and strong." You go for that? "The man I love." Are you sure you haven't met him already? "And when he comes my way..." etc. Similarly, it's useful to have a mental script in your head that you go through during the music break in a song
6. Assemble a great team and trust them. Have a music director that makes you feel great when you're singing to their music. And make sure that you feel you get the support you need for your performance. Have a director that you trust as an outside eye to make sure your show flows, your material suits you and that you look good up there.
7. You have the flexibility to sing a song the way you want to. As theater artists, we constantly have to "color within the lines" in very specific boundaries set by the playwright, composer & lyricist, director, choreographer, lighting designer... In cabaret, the songs are an expression of you. They should all sound like you're the first person to ever sing something and that you're making it up on the spot. As such, you have flexibility to choose arrangements with keys and tempos that suit you. You can sing the intro, skip it, or put it in the middle of the song. You decide what verses you want to sing and in what order, and even if you want to quote another song.
8. Good patter should set up the song, not give it away. The biggest mistake that people make with patter is saying "This next song is about..." and giving a description of the following song so complete that there's no reason to hear it. It's very akin to those movie previews that make you feel you've seen the whole movie already. If you have a really cool take or cool info that will help the audience get a better grip, that's great: "Dorothy Fields spent a large part of her early career writing for Cotton Club performers, and one interpretation of this song is that it is about what the world is like for someone passing for white" followed by On the Sunny Side of the Street. Or it can just set a mood: "OK, maybe the last six relationships didn't work out, but I still believe in believing in what I want" into The Man I Love.
9. Funny patter can replace a comic number. The world of comic songs is comparatively small, and the good ones (e.g. the entire work of Goldrich and Heisler) have been well farmed. However, if you're stuck for a way to lighten up a section of your show, take Andrea Marcovicci's advice once again, and look to tell a funny story or lighten the portion of your show with patter rather than a song.
10. Take names. Think of yourself as a business. Be sure to collect names and build your mailing list for future appearances.
